Dune Buggy vs Quad Biking in Dubai: How to Choose

Compare dune buggy and quad bike experiences by vehicle style, passenger arrangements, riding time and the details to check before booking.

In this guide

Dune buggy rides and quad biking both offer an active way to experience Dubai's desert, but the vehicle and booking arrangements can feel quite different. Start by deciding whether you want to drive, travel as a passenger or arrange an activity for several people.

Then compare the complete experience, including the route, briefing, transport and actual riding time.

Understand the vehicle you are booking

A quad bike, also called an ATV, uses handlebars, as explained in Visit Dubai's riding guide. You sit astride the vehicle, so it is worth asking about the model, riding position and the instruction provided before setting off.

A dune buggy commonly uses a steering wheel and side-by-side seating. The exact seat count varies by vehicle. When looking at a photograph, do not assume that the same model or seating arrangement is included in every package.

Zuhd Tours has separate pages for dune buggy experiences and quad bike desert tours. Compare the current options and ask which vehicle is included in your quote.

Decide who wants to drive

For a couple or group, count drivers and passengers separately. Two people wanting to drive may need a different arrangement from one driver travelling with a passenger.

If you would like to swap drivers, ask whether that is permitted and how the riding time is divided. Also confirm the operator's eligibility, document and passenger requirements for the selected vehicle.

Do not assume that booking a seat guarantees permission to drive. Those are separate questions that should be settled before you arrive.

Compare riding time with total trip time

A package may include hotel transfers, check-in, a briefing, equipment fitting, riding and photo stops. The total outing can therefore be longer than the time spent driving.

Ask for both numbers. This helps you compare offers fairly and plan the rest of your day.

It is also useful to ask whether the activity takes place on a guided route, in a designated riding area or as part of a wider safari. Choose the format that matches your expectations and follow the instructor's route and directions.

Check the full quote

Before confirming, ask:

  • Is the price per person or per vehicle?
  • How many drivers and passengers does it cover?
  • Is hotel pickup included?
  • What equipment and briefing are provided?
  • Are there any deposits or additional charges?
  • What happens if the activity is changed or cancelled?

Choose an outfit that meets the activity requirements. Secure loose belongings and ask the team what you can carry during the ride.

Questions about buggy and quad experiences

Which is better for a first-time rider?

Ask about beginner instruction and the specific route. A photograph or engine-size label alone does not tell you how suitable the session is for your experience level.

Can children join?

Check the rules for the specific activity and vehicle. Driver and passenger requirements may differ, so provide each child's age when enquiring.

Is a buggy ride the same as dune bashing?

No. A self-drive buggy booking and a safari ride as a passenger in a four-wheel-drive vehicle are different experiences. Confirm which one your package includes.
